Thanks DQ! I hear what you are saying. My Gas provider is National Grid (NGG), but I don’t invest in that company as there are better alternatives. Heat is included in my rent, so the only time I use gas is when cooking on the stove. 🙂

Here in the Portland Oregon metro area, Northwest Natural (NWN) is the area’s natural gas provider. Several years ago I looked into the idea of investing in NWN to help in paying their monthly bill. But with a yield of ~3%, I knew I could do better by putting my investing money into higher yielding stocks (ETFs, REITs). I reached a similar conclusion with my internet provider, Comcast (CMCSA). Still, there is a certain delicious delight that comes with paying a utility’s bill and having that utility in turn around pay you with dividends. Congrats on having ConEd paying your electric bill!

Love the idea of owning the companies that you pay your bills to, like hedging your life in a way. Perhaps I should own a really big chunk of Disney to help pay for our family holidays there…
