July 2017 Dividend Income

Well, July is over. This was an exciting month. First, I celebrated my 30th birthday in the first week of July. Secondly, it was my first month living on my own in my own place. As the month progressed I have a better (though incomplete) idea of what my expenses will be each month. And lastly, I started My Dividend Dynasty! Here I am documenting my financial journey into the wonderful world of dividend investing and building a passive income stream that will enable financial independence.

With that, I am posting my monthly dividend results for the first time. This is my “off” month when it comes to dividends. I receive the least amount of dividend income on the months of January, April, July, and October. But nevertheless, even an “off” month is a good month. This month I received $377.44 in dividends from 3 companies.

Medical Properties Trust (MPW) – $216.00

Starwood Property Trust (STWD) – $103.20

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – $58.24

July 2017 Dividend Income Total: $377.44

This is actually a slight decrease from April when those same 3 stocks paid me $387.14 in dividend income. What happened? Well, GSK has a fluctuating dividend and declared a lower dividend for this quarter. We will see what happens next quarter. I did not keep track of monthly dividends last year, so I cannot give an accurate year by year comparison.

However, I do know I never received dividends from STWD last year, so that would mean this July my dividend income got a boost of $103.20. Sounds good to me. Those dividends I received will be used to buy more stocks as I continue my progress to diversify and invest in high quality dividend growth companies.  So this “off” month is still a good month and in more ways than one. So, how did July go for the rest of you?

    Hey Dynasty,

Well, it’s good sometimes being on your own in your own apartment with that wonderful but anxious sense of independence. I don’t have any of the stocks that paid you dividends in July, but that’s still impressive for an “off” month. I haven’t run the numbers yet, but I expect to still be in double-digit territory for July.

Congrats man and happy belated birthday.

Hi DP! Your right about being on your own. Steadily I’m settling into a rhythm as living on my own becomes the new “normal” for me. Thanks DP! 🙂

Nice month. That is still some good progress even though it is technically lower with the fluctuation. Congrats on the new place and happy late bday!

Hi Daze. Yeah, it’s too bad about the decrease, but I guess some progress is better than none. I’m still ahead of the opening “off” month of Jan 2017 which produced $365.05 in dividend income. Next year it will be interesting to see the year by year comparisons. Thanks Daze! 🙂

High dividend income! Have never experienced negative dividend income growth from a company before. Looking forward to hearing what you think about GSK further down the road. However, awesome that you have started to track your dividend income. Best way to stay motivated!

Hi Stockles. Yeah, GSK’s dividend is different each quarter. On the plus side, GSK raised its dividend for the next quarter so I will see an increase in dividend income next quarter. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

You did quite well for an “off” month. Keep up the good work. I have GSK on my watch list and am considering them too. Just not sure how consistent their dividends are or how well covered it is form what I can see. Still, it’s a pretty solid pharma play that has a consumer component too which I like. Thanks for sharing.

Hi DH. Yep, GSK is a good pharma company, even though it can be a bit of a roller coaster. It was one of the first stocks I purchased back in 2015. Last year they had a nice special dividend. Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
