I was thinking about this for a few days: don’t turn your workplace into your home! Your job is not your home!
What exactly does that mean?
I’m not talking about those who work from home with a home office and such.
I am talking about those who commute to their 9-5 job working for someone else. In other words, their job and it’s office building.
I noticed (and you probably noticed this to) that there are people who make their office or workstation like an extra room in their home.
Their office or workspace is decorated with framed pictures of their family, house plants, sometimes bookshelves with their favorite books, and other trinkets you would find in your living room.
That is not a positive move in that it normalized the 9-5 rat race.
Don’t Turn Your Workplace into Your Home
I don’t think it healthy to make your office look like your home. In fact, I think it is a dangerous illusion you are placing over your mind
You are, in a sense, normalizing your 9-5 by blurring the lines between work life and home life.
This may be happening on a subconscious level that you do not even notice.
One thing common I see mainly from the mid-level supervisors and bosses is that they have offices that are decorated like a room in their home.
The other common thing I see is that they have also been slaving away in the rat race for 20-40 years…
Is that the kind of life you want?
Working a stressful job for 8 hours a day (or longer) for 40 years as a cog in a machine? I can’t imagine a darker hell.
To me, there is a fine line between the workplace and my home.
For me, home is a place for peace, confront, and relaxation. The workplace is a place for stress, bullshit, and toiling away for someone else.
I don’t want the two ever blurred together.
I’m not looking to settle into my workplace. I am looking to become financially free from it!
Conclusion
Your job is not your home! Don’t normalize your workplace!
And remember, your job is not forever. You could be let go at any time. Your employer doesn’t care.
No matter how much you settle down into your job, you can be uprooted anytime.
My cubicle looks like a workplace. My home looks like my home. The two are separate.
