Walking: Saving Money, Staying Healthy

I am so glad to be walking to and from work each day. By walking I am saving money and staying healthy.

The parking apocalypse is happening at my job.

The city is shutting down a whole long block to do construction, and nobody can park there anymore. Anyone who tries gets fined and/or towed.

This caused an uproar amongst many of my coworkers.

My coworkers cannot park close to our building anymore and now have to walk some distance to work. They are not happy about having to walk.

I walk to work each day and walk back home.

The walk is 2.4 miles to work and then 2.4 miles back home. It takes about 35 minutes, but it is a fantastic walk first thing in the morning (and going home).

Saving Money and Staying Healthy

The MTA recently raised the public transportation fare to $3.00. So, if I took the 7-minute subway ride to work, it would cost me $6.00 per day.

That is $30.00 per week which means $120.00 per month.

At a year, it would cost $1,440.00 for public transportation. Much less than owning a car, but I save that amount by walking.

And we all know the health benefits of walking are:

Walking lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol balance, and strengthens blood circulation. Walking stimulates the creation of new mitochondria (the energy factories of your cells) and helps remove damaged ones.

Walking slows down brain aging and rebuilds brain tissue. Walking increases blood flow to the brain and boosts brain proteins that support brain cell growth and communication. Clearer thinking, better memory, and improved focus and creativity.

That is why people often think up solutions to problems while walking.

Lastly, the obvious benefit of walking โ€“ burning those calories and maintaining healthy weight and form.

Conclusion

By walking I am saving money and staying healthy.

I am surviving the parking apocalypse quite well. I am very glad I moved close to my job 9 years ago.

Nine years of walking has saved me lots of money and has kept me far healthier than I would have been driving or taking the train.
