April 2020 Dividend Income

April 2020 is in the books and it is time to post my monthly dividend income. It’s a bit hard to believe but next month half the year will be over. And what a year it has been so far. Here in New York, the entire state is on “pause” until at least May 16th to slow the spread of the coronavirus. I looked in the mirror this morning and realized just how bad I need a haircut. Unfortunately, all of the barber shops are closed. Hopefully, we will be able to safely reopen soon. But without further ado, for the month of April 2020, I received $596.70 in dividend income from seven (7) companies!

  • Medical Properties Trust (MPW) – $243.00
  • Starwood Property Trust (STWD) – $171.36
  • Realty Income Corp (O) – $43.80
  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – $68.04
  • Illinois Tool Works Inc. (ITW) – $16.05
  • Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH) – $21.65
  • Leggett and Platt Inc. (LEG) – $32.80

April 2020 Dividend Income Total: $596.70

That is a new record for a quarter starting month. April 2020 shows a 24.48% year over year increase from April 2019. Can’t complain about double digit year over year growth. It is great to see the dividends still coming. Dividends do shine that bit of light during these times of crisis and hardship. While I am still on high alert for potential dividend cuts, I am happy to report April’s dividend increases (and the usual and expected decrease)!

First SO increased their dividend to $0.64 per share. Thus, this increased my dividends from $$503.44 to $519.68 for a $16.24 increase from SO. Next, PG increased their dividend to $0.7907 per share. As a result, this increased my dividends from $74.59 to $79.07 for a $4.48 increase from PG. Then, JNJ increased their dividend to $1.01 per share. Thereby increasing my dividends from $60.80 to $64.64 for a $$3.84 increase from JNJ.

Finally, I am happy to report that newly crowned dividend aristocrat IBM has raised their dividend for the 25th year to $1.63 per share. Not an enormous increase, but I will happily take it as opposed to a freeze or a dividend cut. this increased my dividends from $625.28 to $629.12 for a $$3.84 increase from IBM. Lastly, there was the dividend decrease from GSK which lowered their dividend to $0.465 per share. Consequently, this lowered my dividends from $284.16 to $223.2 for a $60.96 decrease from GSK. Nothing was unexpected about GSK’s dividend decrease as they do it every year.

All in all, the total amount from dividend increases this April was $28.40. When adding the GSK decrease, I end up with a negative net total of $32.56 shaved off my forward yearly dividends. Nevertheless, in terms of finances, the month turned out well. Things could have been much worse. As of this post, my portfolio stands to generate $10,449 in dividend income over the next 12 months. Nobody really knows what is going to happen next, but we will all find out shortly.

So, how was your month? Break any records? Also, how was your balance of dividend increases and decreases, if any? Let me know in the comments below!
